An explanation of cancer dating from the early 1900's is updated here that leads directly to many natural skin cancer treatment and prevention strategies. It also harmonizes with modern research findings and established cancer risk factors.

The most common explanation for the cause of skin cancer is that it is the result of damage from excessive sun exposure. This simple explanation is insufficient and results in ineffective prevention advice and treatments that do not address the causes of the disease. The approach presented here looks at skin cancer for what it really is, a cancer of the skin. That may not sound like a much of an improvement over regarding a lesion as a skin problem to be lopped off, but a natural medicine approach to enhancing the immune system offers a much better long term prospect for optimal health compared to managing skin cancers through surgeries.

This chart tells a clear story regarding the cause of skin cancer. Melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma are the three most common types of skin cancer. All three skin cancer types have similarly shaped graphs of incidence statistics that show steady increases since about 1950. If skin cancer were caused only by ultraviolet (UV) light, we would have to make the absurd conclusion that people were very consistently increasingly reckless every year towards its dangers. A much more likely explanation is that skin cancer is caused by a combination of UV light and dietary factors such as excessive consumption of polyunsaturated fat. By the way, whatever happened to that 1940's sunscreen?

Although modern cancer research has been somewhat fruitful, important findings are slow to be incorporated into treatments. A key reason for this is that a plausible model has never been established, accepted, and communicated by conventional medicine. An alternative explanation of cancer is presented here that harmonizes with modern research findings and established risk factors. This leads directly to many simple skin cancer treatment and prevention strategies presented later.

The Three Necessary Factors of Cancer

We start with material presented in the book One Answer to Cancer by Dr William Kelley. You would be well served to look at the original book available for free on the internet. According to the book, a person cannot have cancer unless three factors are present. These three factors are:

(I) The presence of a certain type of cell that becomes genetically damaged. In the cases of squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma, this damage may result from excessive sun exposure.

(II) The presence of hormones associated with pregnancy. These hormones stimulate a cancerous cell to multiply itself repeatedly, resulting in tumor growth.

(III) A deficiency of active pancreatic enzymes produced by the pancreas. These enzymes circulate in the blood to selectively destroy cancerous cells along with specialized white blood cells known as natural killer cells.

These three factors give us three very different battlefronts to prevent and treat cancers. These factors lead to many simple, inexpensive, easy-to-try strategies that work in harmony with the body. The last factor, pancreatic enzymes or pancreatin, is one of the most powerful natural defense mechanisms in the body. Pancreatin enzymes, despite strong evidence of effectiveness and a century long history of scientific consideration, are rarely recognized as having any benefit in cancer treatments. Awareness of the function of pancreatin enzymes unlocks a powerful weapon to use against cancers. TOP

The Pregnancy Connection to Cancer

The cells that become damaged in cancers are germ or stem cells that occur a rate of roughly 1 for every 10,000 normal cells in the skin. The typical human body probably has billions of stem cells out of an estimated 10 to 100 trillion total cells. The purpose of these stem cells is ostensibly to provide the capability to repair damage that occurs and possibly to isolate embedded pathogens from normal cells.

Stem cells in the skin are concentrated under hair follicles. Lighter skin suffers more damage from the same amount of sun exposure than darker skin. Because of these relationships, the observed higher skin cancer rates for people with fair skin and red hair is probably due to the unique genetic coding and greater vulnerability of those stem cells.

Stem cells have received attention recently because they can be genetically manipulated to become other types of cells, such as in cloning experiments. Stem cells are capable of dividing and renewing themselves for long periods. Unlike muscle cells, blood cells, or nerve cells — which do not normally replicate themselves — stem cells may replicate many times.

When cells replicate themselves many times over it is called proliferation. A starting population of stem cells that proliferates for many months in the laboratory can yield millions of cells. Some type of damage or disease is normally needed to initiate this proliferation mode. The initiation of the proliferation mode depends on both when and where the damage occurred in the cell's DNA so that a long period of time can lapse between the damage event and the onset of proliferation. This explains why severe sunburns in childhood can lead to skin cancers much later in life.

In the case of cancer, the genetic damage induces the stem cell to become a variant of a trophoblast cell. Layers of trophoblast cells are used exclusively in pregnancy to surround a fertilized egg. Their short-lived role in pregnancy is to attach to the uterine wall using tiny protein pieces as hooks or tentacles and provide a path of nutrition to the developing embryo from the mother's normal cells. Cancer is simply trophoblast-like cells growing in inappropriate locations. Photographs of individual cancer cells reveal their tentacles that can clearly be seen in scanning electron microscope pictures.

Artist's rendition of a breast cancer cell showing the tentacles.

Trophoblast cells are also precursor cells of the placenta (afterbirth) which is expelled at birth. This changeover is called differentiation, a term that also arises in cancer where malignant cancer cells can transform into much more normal cells. What happens if trophoblast cells are physically relocated to other areas of the body? In a recent (2002) study involving mice trophoblasts, Harvard researchers performed this experiment and found the trophoblast cells can either grow uncontrollably in their new locations or quickly die, depending on the capability of the immune system and specifically of natural killer cells. These specialized white blood cells are usually fairly plentiful. Natural killer cells normally comprise about 15% of the all white blood cells.

The trophoblast cell responds to the hormones of pregnancy like estrogen and growth hormones that stimulate it to grow, divide, and multiply. A tumor then forms that metabolizes food from the blood supply of the normal tissue where it is attached. In a real pregnancy, the baby's pancreas develops and the enzymes it produces largely dissolve the trophoblast cell attachment when it is no longer needed. The main side effect of the dissolving process in pregnancy is a nauseous feeling known as "morning sickness".

The concept that the dissolving of the trophoblast adhesion is the cause of morning sickness in pregnancy is still not widely recognized. However, this explanation precisely fits the timing and symptoms of morning sickness as noted by the Scottish embryologist Dr. John Beard (1857-1924) of the Edinburgh University Medical School in the early 1900's. Beard was the first to connect the dots between the trophoblast cells of pregnancy, cancer, and pancreatin enzymes. Beard confirmed the efficacy of pancreatin enzymes on cancer tumors. He did this by injecting enzymes directly into tumors. As expected, the injections resulted in the tumors shrinking in size and produced side effects consistent with morning sickness due to the dissolved wastes that must be detoxified by the body.

Trophoblast cells are designed to be killed by high doses of pancreatin enzymes. They are also susceptible to be killed by natural killer cells. What happens if these mechanisms fail to destroy the trophoblast cells in pregnancy? There are still chances for apoptosis (programmed cell death) or differentiation (transforming into more normal cells). But if all these mechanisms (and others not mentioned) fail, we get a condition known as Gestational Trophoblastic Disease (GTD). GTD can develop into a very malignant cancer called choriocarcinoma.

The relationship of the trophoblast cell to a cancer cell is important because they share common characteristics. First we can understand why damage of a stem cell can initiate the cancer process because the trophoblast is a relatively simple mutation of a stem cell. Next we can understand from the pregnancy connection why certain hormones stimulate cancer growth. Finally, we can see trophoblast and cancer cells share normal causes of death. The most significant natural healing mechanisms available to dissolve the attachment we call cancer are pancreatin enzymes and natural killer cells.

The natural killer cell system is very powerful and can be optimized by supplementing a combination of inositol (vitamin B11) and inositol hexaphosphate (IP-6). These nonprescription nutritional supplements have been shown to be effective against every type of cancer tested in worldwide research, and have demonstrated benefits in other diseases and disorders as well. The initial findings on inositol and IP6 were reported in the mid 1980's by Dr. Shamsuddin at the University of Maryland Medical School. Although controlled human studies have not been completed, extensive animal studies have demonstrated the safety and effectiveness of IP-6 and inositol as a treatment for cancers with minimal side effects. Polysaccharides, found in plants such as aloe vera and certain mushrooms (notably agaricus blazei murill (ABM), shiitake, maitake, and reishi), have also been shown to significantly increase natural killer cell production. Still another natural killer cell booster is melatonin, a hormone produced by the pineal gland during sleep. It is also available as a dietary supplement.

Of course, cancer afflicts both men and women despite requiring "female" hormones. This is because even males have a plentiful supply of female hormones. In addition to occurring naturally, they abound in our food supply from many sources including meats and dairy products. Estrogens are a female hormone group that is one of the most active in stimulating cancer growth. There are actually about 40 variations of estrogen in the body, some are more stimulating than others to cancer growth. Chemicals in cosmetics and even sunscreens may also have estrogenic properties.

If every cancer requires female hormones, what about prostate cancer and its apparent connection to the male hormone testosterone? Testosterone can convert to estrogen through an enzyme called aromatase. Because this conversion mechanism is normally weak, the resulting low level of estrogen accounts for the relatively slow growth of prostate cancer compared to, for example, the typically more rapid growth rate of breast cancer. Aromatase inhibitors can be used by both men and women to reduce excess estrogen levels that stimulate cancer growth. Aromatase inhibitors are used by bodybuilders to increase the testosterone to estrogen ratio. The testosterone to estrogen hormone ratio helps to increase the muscle to fat ratio. Interestingly, the reverse is also true: reducing body fat helps to reduce estrogen levels. Leading edge breast cancer treatments use aromatase inhibitors to reduce estrogen formation. Other hormones may also strongly influence the cancer growth rate. Many natural foods and supplements can inhibit the effect of hormones on cancers. TOP

Skin cancer is often a disease of protein metabolism

Pancreatin enzymes have two important functions in the body: digestion of foods and routine cancer eradication. Pancreatin is a mix of different enzymes, and those involved in the digestion of proteins are also used to eliminate cancers that occur throughout the body. Mutations occur not infrequently in the body, but are normally destroyed by activated enzymes manufactured by the pancreas. Only when the amount of pancreatin delivered to the mutated cells is insufficient to "digest" them does the cancer have a chance to thrive. In the case of basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, ultraviolet exposure from the sun, exposure to various toxins, pancreatin unfriendly cosmetics, or an acidic body chemistry may create damage and mutations that eventually overwhelm this healing mechanism or interfere with it.

What are enzymes and how do they work? Enzymes are molecules made from protein that facilitate or speed up certain chemical reactions by making temporary bonds with their reactants. Enzymes can be considered catalysts because they are not consumed or changed as a result of these chemical reactions. A good analogy to help understand enzymes is to consider them as tools. Just as different sized nuts and bolts require precisely sized tools to loosen and tighten them, the body utilizes hundreds of different enzymes to perform specific tasks. Like tools, the precise physical shape of enzymes is critical to their function. Enzymes can be gummed up or deactivated by bonding to other molecules. Enzymes can be warped or destroyed by damage from heating (cooking). Even the low heat of pasteurization is enough to destroy many enzymes present in foods. Enzymes typically are effective only over a limited acid-base pH range.

Consuming protein rich foods at inappropriate times or in excessive amounts can result in a lack of pancreatin enzymes available to fight cancers that occur. Because protein digestion shares the use of the same enzymes (particularly trypsin and chymotrypsin) used to fight cancers, the body needs a time span each day approaching twelve hours or more without protein consumption for its cancer defense mechanism to work optimally. Especially in the past few years, proteins are often looked upon as super healthy in any amount, if not by default because fats and carbohydrates have been vilified. People are eating more protein more often. It turns out the body needs about six hours to digest proteins. The body also needs several hours after that to use the pancreatin it produces to destroy naturally occurring cancers.

Graph showing historical trends of meat consumption in the US over the past century. The rise in total meat consumption (red line) has coincided with the rise in skin cancer incidence. Modern farming practices and a shift away from consuming organ meats that supply enzymes may also have impacted cancer incidence rates. Data source USDA.

Poor diet choices and eating habits can tie up pancreatin enzymes with digestive tasks so that their cancer elimination capability is reduced. For treating and preventing cancer, minimizing the amount of time pancreatin enzymes are devoted to digestion is important. Pancreatin enzymes come into play in digestion after the food has been chewed and then bathed in stomach acid. Compromising these preceding digestive functions may force enzymes to take longer to finish their job. For example, diluting stomach acid by consuming excessive water or taking antacids with meals makes the stomach acid less effective. Incompletely chewing food, eating too much food, or eating too frequently can also be expected to increase the demands made on pancreatin enzymes for digestion. In general regarding stomach acid for digestion, stronger (lower pH) is better and its function should not be compromised as it performs its job.

In order for the pancreatin healing mechanism to work, the pancreatin must be both present and "activated". Cancer cell membranes have protruding hair-like strands made of carbohydrate that can block the physical access of trypsin and chymotrypsin to the exterior proteins. Activation means also supplying enough carbohydrate dissolving amylase enzymes to dissolve the strands so that trypsin and chymotrypsin can be effective. John Beard first recognized the importance of including these amylase enzymes in effective cancer treatments. There may be other elements to activation as well. The compound urea, for example, breaks up the surface tension of the fluids surrounding the cancer cell allowing better access by digestive enzymes to its surface.

A few words are necessary regarding protease inhibitors, a new class of drugs used to fight both HIV (AIDS) and cancer. Proteases are enzymes in the pancreatin enzyme mix that help to break down protein into amino acids and peptides. The fact that these drugs are successful in slowing the growth of cancer would appear to put a snag into this theory of using pancreatin enzymes to kill cancer cells, but both approaches are viable because they work on different mechanisms for cancer. Protease inhibitors slow down the growth of established cancer tumors by preventing them from manufacturing new tentacles from the available protein they ingest. This prevents the cancer cells from physically hooking into normal cells and therefore the blood supply for nourishment. Other methods such as radiation, chemotherapy, or surgery are required to actually kill the cancer cells. Protease inhibitors can at best manage the disease for a period of time. They exacerbate an already enzyme depleted condition and will not likely lead to permanent healing. Of course, protease inhibitor use is incompatible with the use of pancreatin enzymes to overwhelm and break up the cancer cells, and vice versa.

Cancer fighting pancreatin enzymes are ineffective in an acidic environment. It is instructive to first look at how these enzymes are used in digestion. Most people are probably aware that the stomach environment is acidic. Further downstream that acidity is neutralized by alkaline pancreatic juices containing enzymes ducted to the small intestine from the pancreas. This creates a non-acidic environment that enables the pancreatin enzymes present in the fluid to be effective for digestion. In particular, the pancreatic enzyme trypsin is most effective at a pH of 8.5, whereas stomach acid pH typically is in the 1.0 to 2.5 range. A non-acidic or alkaline environment is necessary for pancreatin enzymes to fight cancer. These enzymes are likely best absorbed into the blood for cancer control during periods of fasting or sleep.

A diet comprised mostly of refined foods and meats may result in metabolic acidosis that depletes pancreatin enzymes or diminishes the ability of the pancreas to produce alkaline digestive juices. The adverse effects of an acidic body chemistry stressing the pancreas could perhaps also lead to troubles with insulin production, insulin resistance, and diabetes. An acidic drinking water supply, for example, has been shown to result in increased risk for diabetes.

Most common substances now have Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS's) developed to ensure the safety of workers exposed to them and to detail their safe and effective use, storage, and disposal. One thing we can learn from the MSDS for pancreatin that its storage is incompatible with acids and alcohols. (Pancreatin is listed as a skin irritant, a fairly low level safety concern.) Many popular cosmetics that contain alcohols are a special concern for skin cancer. Sugar alcohols used as sweeteners in many products are also potentially a concern. TOP

Parasites, pollutants, and viruses

Chronic infections, such as from gum disease or parasites, could be expected to sap the capabilities of natural killer cells against cancer. A very independent researcher, Dr. Hulda Clark, has proposed that a combination of parasites (infection rates of up to 95% of the population) and pollutants (especially propyl alcohol for cancer) are a primary cause of many diseases. Propyl alcohol is also known as isopropyl alcohol, rubbing alcohol, propanol, or isopropanol. Because of the widespread use of isopropyl alcohol as a disinfectant and solvent, it also contaminates many processed foods such as cold cereals. Common body products that may have isopropyl alcohol in them include cosmetics, deodorants, shampoos, hair loss remedies, hair sprays, mouthwashes, mousse, body lotions, and shaving supplies. It takes about five days to eliminate isopropyl alcohol from the body after exposure is stopped.

So why is isopropyl alcohol potentially bad? According to Dr Clark, it allows a normally harmless intestinal parasite (the intestinal fluke) to complete its life cycle outside of the intestine. The body responds to this parasite in a similar manner as exposure to the tuberculosis bacteria by attempting to surround the parasite with a tumor to isolate it. Other researchers have suggested that if this parasite and/or tumor material then becomes infected with a virus (the Bx virus or the By virus), the tumor growth suppression mechanisms become defective, resulting in the uncontrolled growth we call cancer. The By virus is said to be associated with carcinomas. Of course, the two most common types of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

Specific details are given in Dr. Clark's books for making effective parasiticides to eliminate parasite infections using black walnut hulls, wormwood, and cloves. Dr. Clark has also described a battery powered electronic circuit that can be built for less than $20 using parts available at Radio Shack. Known as a zapper, this circuit is said to kill the parasites that bog down the immune system. Dr Hulda Clark's book and zapper information are available for free on the internet.

Can we reconcile Clark's parasite theory with the previous theory of a stem cell transforming into a trophoblast cell? Possibly, if we can speculate on the purpose of the millions if not billions of stem cells scattered throughout the body. If one purpose of stem cells is to provide a means of building trophoblastic prisons around unwanted parasites, bacteria, and foreign bodies such as asbestos, then we now have the basis for a simple unified cancer theory. The mechanism for the stem cell damage could come from any cause including a virus or ultraviolet radiation in the case of skin cancer. Stem cells performing their intended function would lead to benign tumor formation in order to isolate pathogens from the body. If damaged, the stem cells can then become a cancer. TOP

Sugar, acid, and cancer cell metabolism

Sugar feeds cancer. Glucose is the primary fuel of cancer cells. Nearly all carbohydrates ingested in the diet are converted to glucose following transport to the liver, but sugar consumption results in markedly higher glucose levels in the blood. Reducing blood glucose levels is an important step towards controlling cancer's ability to thrive. This is most straightforwardly done by reducing sugar, refined flour, and white rice intake. Steps to reduce insulin resistance, such as supplementing chromium or including cinnamon in the diet, should also help. Cravings for foods with high sugar content can result from cancer's insatiable appetite for glucose.

Cancer cells metabolize glucose inefficiently and generate acidic wastes. Normal cells usually metabolize glucose aerobically (with oxygen) which results in a clean, efficient burn. Some cells can burn glucose anaerobically (without oxygen) when under stress such as during intense exercise. Cancer cells are only capable of metabolizing glucose anaerobically. This anaerobic burn is much less efficient in terms of energy release and also generates substantial acidic byproducts. The extra acidity can compound an already bad environment for pancreatin enzymes.

Interrupting the glucose metabolism (glycolysis) of cancer cells is the subject of current research because it can lead to apoptosis (cell death) without harming normal cells. One mechanism employed is to get the cancer cell to ingest lots of calcium which shuts down the glucose metabolism. Another promising mechanism uses acetic acid (vinegar) and citric acid to inhibit the activity of a key enzyme that regulates glycolysis called phosphofructokinase. Combined with a low carbohydrate diet, this helps to shut down the process of glycolysis in cancer cells and can lead to apoptosis.

A cancer tumor typically has poor internal circulation because its structure is formed randomly. This poor circulation allows an acid barrier to develop around the cancer because the acidic wastes are not swept away by the blood flow. The acid barrier can effectively keep out the enzymes the body provides to destroy the cancer. The excess acidity, as well as the ability of both cancer and trophoblast cells to manufacture enzymes, enables the cancer to spread by dissolving adjacent normal cells as a food source. This essentially creates the cancer's own digestive system that is viable as long as blood keeps slowly flowing. I believe the acid barrier surrounding the site is responsible for most of the damage and pain associated with cancers. I know that I experienced a burning sensation with my skin cancers that I attribute to this strong acidity. I think this strongly acidic environment, especially local to the cancer, is the primary reason that cancer does not normally heal on its own. TOP

Inflammation and the COX-2 enzyme

One of the hallmarks of cancer is inflammation. This is especially noticeable with skin cancer because the inflammation results in the all too familiar red lesions. Inflammation can be good or bad depending on the condition and capability of the immune system. Inflammation increases access to the cancer by the immune system and can mean the cancer is being effectively engaged. The bad side of inflammation is that it is integral to the cancer growth cycle and can prevent normal "programmed cell death" or apoptosis from occurring. Two enzymes involved in the inflammation process that generates histamine are cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). Many types of cancer cells rely on the COX-2 enzyme in their metabolic cycle.

Blocking or inhibiting the COX-2 enzyme can significantly disrupt the growth of cancer. For skin cancer treatments based on pancreatin enzymes, inhibiting the COX-2 enzyme is a way to buy time while improving the capabilities of the immune system. Numerous medicines such as antihistamines, NSAIDs aspirin and ibuprofen (Advil), and acid reducers cimetadine (Tagamet)) can block the COX-2 enzyme, although many block both the Cox-1 and Cox-2 enzymes.

The COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes do have otherwise useful purposes. COX-1 enzymes aid the important function of protecting the lining of the stomach from acids. The COX2 enzyme is involved in the production of stomach acid which ultimately aids pancreatin enzymes by helping to digest food. Therefore, inhibiting the COX2 enzyme could potentially interfere with the function of pancreatin enzymes in eradicating cancer. Applying COX-2 inhibitors topically directly on skin cancers is one way to minimize their adverse impact on the stomach lining and stomach acid production. I think most COX2 inhibitors can be a temporary help, but a strong inflammation response is eventually required to heal skin cancers naturally.

As a defense mechanism, the body releases an inflammation promoting substance called tumor necrosis factor (TNF) that is capable of directly killing cancer cells. Some types of cancer cells can manufacture NF kappa B, the antidote to TNF that renders it harmless. Tumor necrosis factor then becomes counterproductive because NF-kappa B leads to COX-2 expression, which cancer needs. The best solution is to disrupt NF-kappa B rather than inhibit either TNF or the COX-2 enzyme because this can result in killing the cancer and not just slowing down its growth.

Curcumin is a very special natural substance that can inhibit NF kappa B and in turn inhibit the COX2 enzyme. This enables the cancer cells to be killed by tumor necrosis factor, pancreatin enzymes, natural killer cells, or even die of apoptosis. Curcumin is an extract of the turmeric plant in the ginger family used to make the Indian spice curry. Because it can inhibit NF kappa B and also disrupt several other mechanisms of cancer, curcumin is at the forefront of many modern natural treatment protocols. TOP

Polyunsaturated and trans fats

OK, which is less healthy for cancer: butter or margarine? Polyunsaturated fats found in margarines and vegetable oils lower cholesterol levels but have been found to significantly increase cancer risk in a large 1998 study. Consumption of monounsaturated fat (found in olive oil and macadamia nuts) decreases cancer risk, and saturated fat was found to have no effect on cancer risk. The most common polyunsaturated fat, linoleic acid, has been fingered as a cancer promoter in several other studies. Linoleic acid presents a paradox: it lowers total cholesterol but is associated with increasing rates of cancer and inflammatory and cardiovascular diseases.

Graph showing historical trends of food consumed in the US over the past century. The dramatic rise in polyunsaturated fat consumption (red curve) has coincided with the rise in skin cancer incidence, as well as other cancers and heart disease. As a reminder, skin cancer incidence rates were very low in 1909 through 1950. Data source USDA.

Although total fat consumption has not changed significantly over the past century, there has been a tremendous shift from saturated fat consumption to polyunsaturated fat largely because we have been told it is healthier. One hundred years ago, cancer rates were very low. The human body's fat make-up is about 55% monounsaturated, 42% saturated, and about 3% polyunsaturated fat. We really need very little polyunsaturated fat in our diet. Modern diets can contain as much as 30% of calories as polyunsaturated oils. The best evidence indicates that our intake of polyunsaturated fats should not be much greater than 4% of the caloric total.

The theory behind the increased cancer rates is that polyunsaturated fats can displace saturated fats in cell structures. The problem with polyunsaturated fats is that they are unstable. Especially when located in skin cell structures, polyunsaturated fats would be easily damaged by contact with oxygen or by ultraviolet light from the sun, forming what are known as free radicals. In turn, free radicals are known to be able to damage the cell's DNA. This genetic cell damage, blamed on the sun but more appropriately due to excessive polyunsaturated fat in the diet, leads to skin cancer.

Another purely unhealthy type of fat is the result of high temperature processing of unsaturated fats to make them stable, known as trans fats or hydrogenated fats. Trans fats are like folding chairs locked in the stacking position. They are worthless in terms of nutrition. Trans fats are incorporated into cell structures, but because of their shape they are not permeable to oxygen and nutrients. The result is inflammation, more free radicals, less flexibility in cell structures such as arteries, and lesions that form to isolate the improper cell structures from the rest of the body. Americans consume on average approximately 6 grams of trans fats per day. The major sources of artificial trans fat in our diets come from cakes, cookies, crackers, margarine, fried foods, snack foods, and shortening. Completely avoid hydrogenated fats.

Graph showing historical trends of shortening use as an indication of trans fats consumed in the US over the past century. Trans fat is clearly detrimental to health and has been consumed in increasing amounts since 1950. The large jump in the year 2000 data is partially due to changes in data collection. Data source USDA.

Saturated fats, like those found in butter, are stable. They do not oxidize and form free radicals. Also, certain saturated fats may hold vital keys to cancer cell apoptosis (programmed cell death) and necrosis (inflicted cell death). Lauric acid from coconut oil enhances the killing ability of the immune system hormone tumor necrosis factor (TNF) by 60 times. It also causes the mitochondrial membranes of cancer cells to swell, making them unstable. This further promotes programmed cell death. Another saturated fat also found in coconut oil, palmitic acid, has demonstrated pronounced effects against cancers.

Some of the bad news concerning saturated fats in past studies came from combining trans fats and saturated fats together in one category. Saturated fats raise both HDL (good) and LDL (bad) cholesterol, whereas trans fats lower HDL and raise LDL cholesterol. Evaluation of the fat in artery clogs reveals that only about 26% is saturated. The rest is unsaturated, of which more than half is polyunsaturated. Coconut oil, which is about 85% saturated fat, is ideal for cooking and is widely used in countries with low cancer and cardiovascular disease rates. TOP

Carcinogens and amalgam fillings

Many substances have been studied and labeled as carcinogens or potential carcinogens. The World Health Organization maintains a Carcinogenic Potency Database of hundreds of chemicals that have been determined to possibly or probably cause cancer. Of course it makes sense to avoid contact with these chemicals. Tobacco products would fall into this category of known substances to avoid.

There are several insidious carcinogens to worry about. Mycotoxins are toxins produced by molds and fungi. Some mycotoxins are known carcinogens, others can be estrogenic, others can damage organs and impair the immune system. Mycotoxins can sometimes be put to beneficial use, such as antibiotics, but even their use may have profound unintended consequences. Mycotoxins are common in stored agricultural products such as grains and corn, as well as the products made from them such as bread, cereals, and alcoholic beverages. Aflatoxin is a mycotoxin carcinogen that infects peanuts. Many mycotoxins are heat stable or fat soluble so they may not rinse off with water or be destroyed by cooking. A leading theory is that MS is the result of mycotoxin damage. The best way to avoid mycotoxins is to limit cereals, grains, and alcoholic beverages. Rice and oats are safer food choices because they generally resistant to fungal contamination. Exposure to mycotoxins can also result from molds in infested buildings. Vitamin D from sunlight is naturally antifungal, providing another reason that sun avoidance advice for skin cancer may be shortsighted.

Researchers in Sweden recently discovered unexpectedly large amounts of the chemical acrylamide in foods rich in starch that had undergone high temperature cooking or processing. Acrylamide is known to cause cancer in animals. It is considered probable that it could also cause cancer in humans. The affected products include such health staples such as french fries, snack chips, chocolate, and doughnuts. High temperature cooking of meats also produces carcinogens known as heterocyclic amines.

A possible severe health danger to consider is chronic mercury exposure from common silver amalgam fillings used to repair teeth. Amalgam fillings are composed of approximately 50% mercury combined with lesser amounts of silver, tin, copper, and zinc. Amalgam fillings are very stable mechanically in the hostile environment of the mouth. However these amalgam fillings continually release low levels of mercury that are absorbed through the digestive system and the lungs. This finding is no longer disputed because of the advent of modern mercury vapor measurement equipment. Mercury poisoning is suspected by some as a causal factor in many diseases including periodontal (gum) disease, cardiovascular disease, lupus, autism, multiple sclerosis, Crohn's disease, hypothyroidism, Alzheimer's disease, and cancer.

Seafood Mercury Warning (comic)

How much mercury do amalgam fillings release and how harmful is this level of continual exposure? The World Health Organization reports that mercury absorption from amalgam fillings typically exceeds all other sources combined, including exposure from consumption of fish, food, air, and water. Amalgam fillings release mercury at an absorbed rate of 3 to 17 micrograms a day. All other sources combined typically add up to less than 3 micrograms absorbed per day. Mercury is one of the most toxic substances to the immune system. Each large amalgam filling contains about the same amount of mercury (1 gram) as in an old fashioned thermometer, a huge amount in terms of what can cause harm. It does not take much mercury exposure to cause severe health problems. The exposure rate may be higher if you have more than the average of 8 amalgam fillings, if you breathe through your mouth, if you chew gum, or if the dental work was recent. Mercury concentrations build over time due to the continual exposure and the long half time (time for the absorbed mercury concentration to return to half of the initial level) of approximately 50 days to eliminate it.

In my opinion, the dental care industry is where the tobacco industry was in the 1950's regarding denial of the harm caused by current practices. Mercury is a known enzyme inhibitor, supplanting the vital roles of zinc and selenium in enzyme reactions. It inhibits the body's production of melatonin. It affects the bioavailability of vitamin B12, vitamins A and C, and folic acid. Mercury has an affinity for any molecule that has sulfur in its structure, which is present in all proteins. Heat (consuming hot beverages), pressure (chewing food, chewing gum, grinding teeth while sleeping), and abrasion (brushing and polishing teeth, exposure to acids) cause a significant short term increase in the release of mercury from amalgam fillings.

Mercury is primarily absorbed as a vapor by the body through the lungs. Pancreatin enzyme supplementation often reduces allergy symptoms, clearing sinuses so that more breathing is done through the nose rather than the mouth. This may result in less mercury vapor absorption via the lungs. Cancer invariably results in very acidic saliva, which may further increase mercury release from fillings.

There are many strategies available to regain immune system functions lost to mercury and toxic metal poisoning. Some of these measures also explain known risk improvement factors for cancer. These include supplementing zinc and selenium to displace mercury in enzyme reactions. Supplementing melatonin is also a recognized effective cancer treatment and prevention measure. Eating green vegetables helps because chlorophyll can chelate mercury. Green vegetables are also rich in the vitamins that may be adversely affected by mercury. Vitamin C, N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), garlic, cilantro, and IP-6 bind with mercury so it can be eliminated. Eating sulfur rich foods and sulfur containing supplements such as MSM can help eliminate mercury form the body. Sweating from exercise or a sauna is another mechanism to eliminate toxic metals. An advantage to sweating is that it does not require the involvement of the liver to filter the toxic wastes. Avoiding certain fish such as tuna can reduce mercury intake to return the balance in favor of mercury elimination.

Glutathione made in the body helps eliminate toxic metals such as mercury. Glutathione taken as a supplement does not boost cellular glutathione levels, since glutathione breaks down in the digestive tract before it reaches the cells. Supplements that increase cellular glutathione include ornithine, alpha lipoic acid, NAC, pycnogenol, and silymarin from milk thistle.

If you have future dental work, find a dentist trained in minimizing your exposure to mercury. There are problems in removing and replacing amalgam fillings beyond the cost. Amalgam removal can result in severe mercury vapor exposure, potentially doing more harm than good. Therefore, if you have cancer, it is probably wiser to "let sleeping dogs lie" and defer removal until you are well. If you have amalgam fillings, do not breathe through your mouth during dental work. Postpone the appointment if you can't breathe comfortably through your nose that day. There are durable alternative fillings available without mercury. It may be easier for you to ask your dentist to use these alternative white fillings based on their improved appearance.

What about skin cancer and alcohol? Moderate alcohol intake helps to prevent mercury absorption, perhaps mitigating some of its detriments for cancer. Moderate wine consumption is associated with reduced cancer risk. Some of this benefit may actually be due to other factors such as resveratrol, a polyphenol found in red wine and grape juice.

A recent study with mice found that even moderate alcohol consumption resulted in accelerated tumor growth. The researchers found that tumors in the alcohol-fed mice were nearly twice the weight of tumors in the control mice. When a rodent, or a human, gulps down a drink, the cells in their bodies attempt to get rid of the toxins. The stressed cells send out a hormone dubbed VEGF that stimulates the growth of blood vessels—a tumor’s means of getting oxygen and nutrients to survive. The researchers found the alcohol-fed mice showed a significant increase in VEGF as well as more blood vessels than the other mice.

Excessive alcohol intake is an established cancer risk factor. Excessive alcohol interferes with digestion and is generally unhealthy. Alcoholic beverages may be made from grains contaminated with molds that produce carcinogenic mycotoxins. We have also shown that alcohol potentially degrades the function of pancreatin enzymes. Finally, alcohol must be detoxified by the liver which may be already under stress. For these reasons, limit alcohol use to very moderate levels. TOP

Natural anticarcinogens

Taking advantage of natural anticarcinogens available in the diet or through supplements is also possible. A good example is the powerful cancer fighting nutrient conjugated linoleic acid or CLA (NOT to be confused with cancer promoting linoleic acid!). CLA stimulates the immune system, inhibits cancer initiation and growth, improves insulin sensitivity, improves blood lipid levels, improves lean body mass to fat ratios, and has no known practical toxicity levels. Meat and dairy products traditionally are good sources of CLA. Modern farming practices have led to a steady decline in the amount of CLA supplied in the diet over the past fifty years. The meat of grass-fed cows contains up to four times as much CLA as cows fattened with grain or corn.

Today's dairy products have only about one third of the CLA content they used to have before 1960. Recent trends toward organic dairy products are a big step back in the right direction. One of the requirements for organic certification is having adequate pasture available. However, there have been news reports showing unscrupulous dairies can circumvent the adequate pasture requirement by making access to it more theoretical than actual to "sell for less." Be discerning and prepare to pay more for quality organic food.

A case could be made that the cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity epidemics we are now experiencing are largely due to the decline of CLA in the diet. Part of the ancient rationale for avoiding the eating of "unclean" scavenger animals, in addition to concerns about parasites, may be due to the fact that these animals can be expected to supply very little CLA. A disturbingly similar situation is now developing with seafood where farm raised fish are replacing wild fish in markets. Many wild fish naturally include ocean vegetation in their diets resulting in cancer fighting omega 3 oils that may be missing from farm raised fish.

Many other powerful anticarcinogenic nutrients have been identified and are available in foods that may be missing from the diet such as ellagic acid from berries. Sulfurophane is an anticarcinogenic substance found in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli. Other natural anticarcinogens include D-glucarate, di-indolylmethane (DIM), and indole-3-carbinol (I3C). Researchers at Johns Hopkins University have patented a strain of broccoli sprouts with a high sulfurophane content available at many supermarkets in the US. Polyphenols found in green tea (EGCG) and red wine (resveratrol) work by inhibiting enzyme reactions vital to the cancer growth cycle. Many of these cancer fighting compounds have been isolated and are available as nutritional supplements. However, the compounds often seem to be more effective in their natural food forms. Many studies have demonstrated that topical anticarcinogens including ellagic acid and olive oil (polyphenols) are effective against skin cancer.

Implications of the skin cancer model

Cancer science in the past century has been mostly ineffective because it lacks the foundation of a plausible model, such as the trophoblast model described on this page. Developing a model is the first basic step needed to understand and then effectively address a problem. Choosing a model that describes the condition is important because it leads to effective treatment and prevention strategies and releases us from ineffective strategies. It also provides a context to consider otherwise bewildering research findings.

With the trophoblast model, the underlying causes are the same for any type of cancer. This means that treatments found to be effective for other types of cancer should also be generally effective for skin cancers. In the case of skin cancer, instead of focusing on excessive sun exposure, although important, efforts would be better spent on improving the pancreatin enzyme eradication and natural killer cell mechanisms as well as inhibiting growth mechanisms. A model helps us realize that surgery is treating cancer symptoms and is not going to eliminate its causes. A model enables us to steer clear of initially enticing but ultimately disappointing therapies such as protease inhibitors.

It should also be recognized that there are other tiers of body's immune system defenses against cancer involving T-cells, interferon, interleukins, tumor necrosis factor, and probably a host of other factors. It is impossible to assign a relative importance to each tier of the system, but I think pancreatin enzymes and natural killer cells are the primary, but mostly unrecognized, lines of defense against cancer. Optimizing these immune systems is very fruitful and is within the grasp of ordinary people. Additionally, several other recognized methods of selectively killing skin cancer cells are presented in the strategies.

An argument presented against enzyme therapy for cancer treatment is that is based on a 1900's understanding of cancer so it can't be right because it is too old and unsophisticated. From what I have read, John Beard was a brilliant embryologist and pancreatin enzyme experimenter who came up with a simple model of cancer that precisely matches the disease. It is interesting to note that the importance of stem cells as the starting point of cancer is now gaining mainstream acceptance.

Another argument is there is no proof of the effectiveness of enzyme therapy for cancer. First, it needs to be pointed out that five year survival rates in 2005 for many types of cancer treated by the best of conventional methods (surgery, radiation, chemotherapy) are still less than 10%, just as they were 40 years ago. Nearly every one of the more than half million deaths from cancer each year in the US is evidence of the inexplicable failure rate of standard treatments, yet alternative treatments are usually not considered. I believe this is a result of the "accepted" cancer model (whatever that is) being flawed or too complex to be useful. The proof of the value of John Beard's model is the success of thousands of people using it over many years to prevent and treat a variety of cancers.

The author of the book One Answer to Cancer, Dr William Kelley, is a survivor of cancer of the pancreas in the 1960's (current 5 year survival rate of about 4% or less with conventional treatments). He claimed to have about an 93% success rate treating thousands of cancers over several decades. One factor limiting his success is that often people would come to him in extremely poor condition after exhausting conventional treatments. Another factor was the intense opposition to his work, in part because he was a doctor of dentistry and not medicine. Dr. Kelley's enzyme based cancer therapy was denounced for decades despite its incredible success by mainstream medicine and by organizations such as the American Cancer Society. Dr. Kelley's work has been continued by the accredited Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez who reviewed Kelley's records and found terminal cancer patients alive and healthy years after they should have been dead. Dr. Gonzalez and Dr. Linda Isaacs of New York have continued to validate enzyme therapy with peer reviewed publications of successful treatments (Nutrition Cancer, Gonzalez et al, 1999). They are currently conducting a NCI/NIH funded clinical trial (a 5-year $l.4-million study) at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center.

I found out about the healing power of pancreatin enzymes before becoming aware of them. I have used pancreatin enzyme based treatments successfully on two potential skin cancers. On the first lesion recommended for a biopsy by a dermatologist as a probable squamous cell carcinoma, I used a topical pancreatin enzyme preparation (actually a mosquito bite remedy) that I more or less stumbled upon by the grace of God. I investigated the ingredients only after observing healing. On a second lesion with skin cancer symptoms, I included oral pancreatin enzyme supplements along with several other strategies based on the three necessary factors found in Dr. Kelley's book. In both instances, healing progress was noticeable within a few days, fairly complete healing took several weeks.

From these experiences, I have detailed many free or inexpensive, easy-to-try home remedy strategies in the next sections. I believe it is possible to effectively fight skin cancer based on the three necessary factors for cancer to exist. Applying the first of these factors is to avoid genetic damage to the stem cells in the body. Second is to remove or mitigate the effects of the hormones of pregnancy such as estrogen from stimulating cancer growth. Applying the final factor is to boost the ability of the immune system to fight cancer with its most powerful weapons, namely digestive enzymes and natural killer cells. Part of the optimism for natural healing is because skin cancers present unique opportunities for treatment compared to other cancers because the tumors are accessible. The next section looks at effectively and holistically applying this theory specifically to the most common skin cancers, squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma.

My goal is to help people afflicted with skin cancer learn in detail about alternatives and options that may be useful to them, without promoting anything for sale or offering medical advice. Of course, any alternative cancer theory and treatment should be approached with considerable caution and with the understanding that you experiment with it entirely at your own risk. Consult with your doctor before making treatment decisions.

The Skin Cancer Treatment Toolbox [part 1]

The Skin Cancer Treatment Toolbox

Skin cancer treatment strategies are presented that can be used against squamous cell carcinoma or basal cell carcinoma lesions. These strategies target the traits of skin cancers identified by a simple but comprehensive model of cancer based on pancreatin enzymes. By taking steps to impede the cancer's growth and improve the performance of the body's own defense mechanisms, natural skin cancer healing is possible!

Squamous and Basal Cell Carcinoma Treatment Strategies Part I

See also Part II

This is the first part of a collection of skin cancer treatment strategies that harmonize with the pancreatin enzyme theory of cancer. All these strategies are either free or inexpensive to try. Nearly all the supplements mentioned are easy to find at vitamin stores or supermarkets. Do not consider these ideas as medical advice for your unique situation or as a substitute for appropriate medical attention. Especially, if you think you may have melanoma, see a doctor immediately. These treatment strategies may not produce beneficial results for everyone. The strategies are not presented in any specific order. Consider these strategies as tools: they can be very useful or they can be inappropriate or misused depending on the circumstance. Understand that you try any of these strategies entirely at your own risk. See my statement of caution and disclaimer.

Here are the strategies:

(1) Investigate the many sources of alternative cancer treatment information

Conventional medicine generally relies on surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy to treat cancer. Although relatively few people die from squamous or basal cell skin cancers when treated with these procedures, they are not very satisfactory because of disfigurement and frequent recurrences. Alternative medicine approaches that endeavor to optimize the capabilities of the immune system against cancer are especially attractive. Many of these alternatives are supported by credible scientific research. The skin cancer resource page has links to leading web sites that disseminate the most current scientific cancer research results plus outstanding alternative medicine sites that emphasize natural healing approaches. These research results and approaches can be adapted to heal and prevent skin cancers.

At least glance through One Answer to Cancer by Dr William Kelley, first written in 1967. The book provides a sound basis for cancer healing by optimizing the function of the immune system using natural pancreatin enzymes. It also provides practical strategies, many of which I tried to include here. This book will give the reader realistic hope for natural cancer healing and perspective on the battle ahead. A person may think they are treating only a small skin cancer lesion but may have other undiagnosed cancers elsewhere in the body as well. The book is necessary preparation for those placed in that situation. Anyway, the price is right (it is free). An update to this book is also available at Amazon.com. Current cancer treatments based on this protocol, such as from Dr Gonzalez in New York City, are now recognized as legitimate and effective.

(2) Limit consumption of protein

Leave one long span of at least twelve hours and preferably longer without protein intake each day. Cancer is usually a disease of protein metabolism. Some daily protein intake is recommended for muscle maintenance and healing, but skipping protein during one or preferably two meals makes sense. Never eat a late night snack containing protein. This strategy is easy to underestimate in importance. This daily protein fast is necessary so that pancreatin enzymes can be freed from their other job of digesting protein in food to work instead on cancer eradication throughout the body. The cancer also needs protein based building blocks to grow and this strategy limits its available supply. The official protein recommended daily allowance (RDA) depends on body weight:

Protein RDA Table: RDA (grams)= 0.36* (Weight in lbs.)

Body Weight in Pounds Daily Protein in Grams
100 36
125 45
150 54
175 63
200 72
250 90

Try to eat for your ideal weight. As a point of reference, a 6 ounce can of tuna supplies about 40 grams of protein. A piece of meat about the same size will supply similar amounts of protein. Adjustments should be made for individual circumstances such as the activity level. The average person consumes almost twice this recommended daily amount, and high protein diets that triple or quadruple this amount are not uncommon. Keep in mind the RDA is a recommended level and not a minimum level so that one can consume less than this amount.

Blood type may have an influence on individual daily protein requirements. People with blood type A comprise about 40% of the population and have more difficulty with protein metabolism than people with blood types O and B.

One can take this strategy of limiting protein too far, so be observant for signs of protein deficiency such as "flaky paint" skin. For treatment purposes, the RDA level should probably be considered a maximum level. Deficiencies are easy to reverse by slightly increasing protein intake. Another point to consider is that many of the enzymes the body produces are ultimately derived from protein in the diet.

(3) Supplement pancreatin enzymes

I began by doing this only topically, but now I think it makes sense to use digestive enzymes containing pancreatin orally as the primary way to supplement. A drawback of applying pancreatin topically is that a person needs knowledge of the skin cancer location; by applying it orally the body automatically finds and fixes them all. I think this leads more systematically to a completely cancer free body. Topical pancreatin treatments can be combined with oral pancreatin supplements to increase the dose applied to the cancer, potentially speeding up healing and minimizing the costs involved.

I found that pancreatin produces a flushing of the skin, especially when treatment is first started. If I took too much I would look like a cooked lobster. So the amount to take and the timing for me was initially regulated by that flushing effect, which lasted for several hours. I tried to keep a pink tinge to my skin by taking just small pieces of the pancreatin supplement tablets many times a day when first starting. Later I was able to take six tablets or more at a time with no noticeable side effects. I am sure the amount needed by each person is unique but I ended up going through 8-12 tablets a day, with the biggest dose taken at night before sleeping.

What should one look for in a enzyme supplement? Trypsin and chymotrypsin are the protein dissolving enzymes in pancreatin believed to be most effective against cancer. Amylases are carbohydrate dissolving enzymes that improve the effectiveness of the protein dissolving enzymes by removing hair-like strands protruding from the cancer cell membrane that can block the access of protein dissolving enzymes. Most inexpensive enzyme supplements will not indicate the presence of trypsin and chymotrypsin on the label, instead grouping their function as proteases along with any other protein dissolving enzymes. It is not safe to assume trypsin and chymotrypsin are present in effective amounts in every enzyme supplement containing pancreatin. According to Dr. Kelley, it is now difficult and expensive to find worthy pancreatin supplements, specifically because the chymotrypsin content is usually minimal. If one has access to a butcher shop, obtaining the pancreas or sweetbreads (dry, cook, eat raw? you are really on your own here) and skipping supplements entirely might be considered.

Other ingredients are often included in enzyme supplements. Pepsin is a protein dissolving enzyme that works only in an acidic environment, so it might be a good choice to include with meals. The plant derived enzymes papain (papaya), and bromelain (pineapple) could also be beneficial for digestion. Betaine hydrochloride, a strong acid, is sometimes added to enzyme supplements. For cancer eradication purposes, betaine hydrochloride should not be taken at the same time with pancreatin enzyme supplements. Betaine hydrochloride taken alone with meals is useful in improving digestion in the stomach so that less digestion will later be required by pancreatin enzymes.

Since pancreatin is destroyed by stomach acid and needs to be absorbed in the intestine to fight cancer, an important consideration is to get the supplements past the stomach and into the intestine as rapidly as possible. Take supplements on an empty stomach if possible. Take the supplements while standing or sitting, rather than lying down. Taking extra pancreatin at night before sleeping on an empty stomach with antacids, or the stomach acid reducer cimetadine (Tagamet), and water, seems like a good idea to me. For cancer prevention purposes, taking pancreatin at night would seem to be most beneficial. I thought it was kind of a waste to take pancreatin supplements with meals because I felt they would be destroyed before doing anything useful, but most other sources recommend doing so.

A good vitamin specialty store will have as many as ten or more brands and types of enzymes from which to choose. There is concern regarding the quality of pancreatin supplements available in vitamin stores. Even prescription versions of pancreatin used in the treatment of cystic fibrosis have proven to be inconsistent, prompting a recent FDA admonishment to improve these products. Combining enzyme supplements from a couple of different sources can provide a broader spectrum of enzymes and alleviate some quality concerns.

Typical good quality pancreatin enzyme supplement

This Source Naturals Pancreatin 8X product is a good enzyme supplement value.

I have used several enzyme products that I think are representative of what is available for about $10 for a bottle of 90 to 100 tablets or capsules.

GNC Enzyme Digestant contains Pancreatin 400 mg, alpha-Amylase 130 mg, betaine hydrochloride 65mg, pepsin 65 mg, papain 65 mg, Ox Bile Extract 8:1 8.1 mg.

Vitamin World Pancreatin Enzyme contains 1400 mg pancreatin (233.3 mg of pancreatin 8:1 extract) providing 40 mg amylase, 40 mg lipase, and 40 mg protease.

Pancreatin by NOW Foods provides Pancreatin 4X 500 mg, (Amylase 50,000 USP units, Protease 50,000 USP units (Trypsin and Chymotrypsin), Lipase 9000 USP units) This product is a powder in a gelatin capsule, making it easy to include in topical preparations by pulling the gelatin capsule apart. Twinlabs makes a similar product.

Source Naturals Pancreatin 8X has protease 100000 USP units, Lipase 18000 USP units, and amylase 100000 USP units in a gelatin capsule. This is my current preferred brand.

Based on the enzyme deficiency cancer theory, higher doses than I took can be considered. Higher doses are consistent with Dr Kelley's proven methodology. Actually, the current Dr Gonzalez recommendation is for 45000 mg a day, which is a lot of pills (32 to 112 of the above types) to take each day. Side effects that can be expected with high doses (and cancer) are flu like symptoms and nausea. Oddly, nausea can be a good sign. Nausea is simply an indication that the cancer is being dissolved at a high rate. Nausea should not be experienced if cancer is not present and can be controlled by the dose. Frequent urination is another side effect I noticed. The expense and number of tablets one feels comfortable taking per day may also be limiting factors on the dose. Topical treatments are a way to increase the level of enzymes presented to the cancer without consuming large amounts orally.

Even though enzymes are catalysts, they promote reactions that tend to make the body more acidic, which in turn depletes them. It is important to make sure the body chemistry is not acidic by checking saliva acidity regularly and adjusting it if enzyme supplementation is being considered.

See your doctor for advice if you are taking any medications. It might be prudent to monitor blood pressure during treatment because enzymes tend to raise it. Based on John Beard's views concerning preeclampsia in pregnancy, including amylase enzymes may help to offset any increase in blood pressure induced by enzyme therapy. A good side effect is that enzymes can clear up allergy symptoms.

(4) Limit alcohol use

Alcohol destroys pancreatin and interferes with digestion. Moderate red wine consumption is actually a beneficial risk factor for cancer, probably due in part to a polyphenol called resveratrol or because alcohol interferes with mercury absorption. I would limit even red wine consumption during treatment because alcohol needs to be detoxified and the liver already has enough to do with processing cancer debris.

A 2007 study found that moderate alcohol consumption significantly increased the tumor size of breast cancer in mice. The equivalent of 2 drinks a day caused a 2-fold increase in tumor weight vs. control mice. The study also found that moderate alcohol intake caused an increase in tumor blood vessel density vs. the control group, and that a hormone called VEGF associated with tumor blood vessel growth was increased in the alcohol group. Even moderate alcohol consumption appears to promote cancer growth. Watch for alcohol in products such as mouth washes.

Discontinue any topical alcohol use, such as topical minoxidil, some deodorants, after shave lotions, and colognes. Alcohol in cosmetics is often in the form of isopropyl alcohol that, according to some sources, may enable parasites to flourish. Parasites can tie up the immune system unnecessarily, and may even promote cancer by stimulating stem cells to form trophoblastic barriers around the parasite. If these stem cells suffer genetic damage, such as from ultraviolet radiation, they can become cancers.

(5) Discontinue topical acid use

Acids such as alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) destroy pancreatin and may cause cell damage. Exfoliates such as these products remove the dead outer part of the skin but this potentially exposes the live cells underneath to more UV radiation. Many cosmetic manufacturers try to match the natural acidity level of the outer part of the skin and so these cosmetics are also potentially destructive to pancreatin.

A low cost (~$6-10 at pet stores) and easy to use pH test kit for aquariums can be used to check for the acidity of cosmetics. The test kit procedure is described on the acid test page. Just substitute the cosmetic for the saliva sample. Possibly baking soda can be added incrementally to the cosmetic, using the aquarium test kit to check the pH level, to neutralize the acid if the other ingredients in the cosmetic are considered valuable. The baking soda will tend to make an acidic cosmetic watery because as the acid is neutralized it is converted to water. In my experiments with topical pancreatin, I noticed the potency of the mixture I applied seemed to decline rapidly over time if it was acidic.

Exceptions to this topical acid rule may include some beneficial fatty acids with anticarcinogenic properties. These possibly include ellagic acid, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), stearic acid, alpha linolenic acid (ALA), and gamma linolenic acid (GLA). Just because a compound has "acid" in its name it does not necessarily mean the compound is to be avoided.

(6) Exercise regularly

Exercise minimizes muscle atrophy so that the cancer cannot sap the protein it needs to grow from muscle wasting. It is important to exercise at least as much as before the treatment period. Keeping muscles hungry for protein and glucose makes the cancer compete for the available food supply. Exercise also enhances circulation to aid pancreatin transportation to the cancer site and to flush acidic wastes away from the cancer site. Moderate levels of exercise such as walking are probably preferable to very intense exercise in order to minimize lactic acid and histamine production. Histamine and lactic acid are also produced by cancers and appear to be integral to the cancer growth cycle. Even a walk around the block helps to prevent the lymph system from becoming stagnant. Exercise also prompts the body to produce more melatonin, one of its most effective hormones to fight cancers.

A 2007 Rutgers study involving mice found that both exercise and oral caffeine (amount equivalent to a cup or two of coffee) reduced the incidence and severity of skin cancer. Caffeine apparently promotes a natural self destruction mechanism of cells called apoptosis. This causes damaged cells to kill themselves, a type of programmed cell suicide that prevents development of abnormal growths. Caffeine acts selectively, causing the aberrant cells to die while not affecting normal cells. Compared to the UVB-exposed control animals, the caffeine drinkers showed an approximately 95 percent increase in UVB-induced apoptosis and the exercisers showed a 120 percent increase. The mice that consumed caffeine and exercised showed a nearly 400 percent increase in UVB-induced apoptosis over a group that had no access to an exercise wheel and had no caffeine.

(7) Limit meat and dairy products

Meats and dairy products have the potential for high content of protein, carcinogens, female hormones, iron, and growth hormone factors. Red meat consumption is a significant established risk factor for cancer. Pork products in particular are associated with a higher incidence of certain cancers. Processed, smoked, or well done meats increase the risk. A group of carcinogenic compounds called heterocyclic amines or HCAs can form when meat is cooked too long at high heat. HCAs tend to form when moisture is removed from meat. HCA formation in cooked meats can be minimized by cooking slower at lower temperatures, marinating, or precooking in the microwave. Discard burned portions of meats. A crock pot is a good way to cook meat.

Dairy product consumption has been associated with certain cancers through IGF-1 (insulin-like growth hormone factor 1). IGF-1 seems to promote the rapid growth of cancers. Cows treated with rBGH, a synthetic hormone used to increase milk production that is banned in many countries (but not the US), produce extra IGF-1. High serum IGF-1 levels are strongly linked to prostate, lung, colon, and breast cancers. Oddly enough, IGF-1 supplements are available, but of course are not recommended. Be very careful of mixing growth hormones and cancer. The intended purpose of milk is to promote rapid cell growth to aid the survival of the baby. This is similar to the needs of cancer. Vitamin D, flax seed, and lycopene (from tomatoes) can reduce the effect of IGF-1.

Using soy products as a protein source or dairy alternative is a question mark; some sources say soy products block estrogen, others say that they add estrogen (but a weaker form of it). Soy products also are promoted as protease enzyme inhibitors (see pancreatin enzyme theory of cancer), which is incompatible with pancreatin based treatments. According to Dr Kelley's book, eggs are an ideal source of protein.

Red meats and blood are a leading source of iron in the diet. Cancer cells require large amounts of iron to replicate. Excess iron intake and iron stores in tissues are implicated in many cancers. Excess iron causes insulin resistance, raising blood glucose levels that fuel cancers. Excessive iron can also diminish the pancreas capability to produce the sodium bicarbonate that provides an alkaline environment for pancreatin enzymes.

Iron intake has similar historical trend to melanoma incidence

Graph showing historical trends of various minerals in food consumed in the US over the past century. The red line depicting iron intake has a similar shape to melanoma incidence over this time period. As a reminder, cancer incidence rates were very low in 1909. Data source USDA.

Much like protein, an appropriate amount of iron is required by the body, so the situation is tricky to balance. Anemia, a condition where the blood lacks the capability to deliver sufficient oxygen to cells, promotes cancer growth and can be caused by insufficient iron. Because cancer thrives in in a low oxygen environment and immune defenses do not, anemia must be avoided! Unless there is a mechanism for blood loss, most people do not have to worry about anemia. Cold hands and feet are a symptom of anemia. IP6, mentioned later, binds and removes excess iron. Multivitamins with iron, fortified breads and cereals, tobacco use, air pollution, alcohol consumption, excessive vitamin C intake, and iron cookware can also contribute to high iron levels. Chemotherapy can also lead to anemia.

(8) Consider supplementing CLA

Meats and dairy products do contain a remarkable cancer fighting nutrient called conjugated linoleic acid or CLA (Tonalin). A steady decline in the amount of CLA supplied by meats and dairy products in the diet through the past 50 years years can be attributed to modern farming practices. The meat of grass-fed cows contains up to four times as much CLA as cows fattened in feed lots. Today's dairy products have only about one third of the CLA content they used to have before 1960. CLA stimulates the immune system, inhibits cancer growth, improves insulin sensitivity (be careful if diabetic), improves blood lipid levels, improves lean body mass to fat ratios, and has no known practical toxicity levels. Organic dairy products could be expected to have more CLA because there is a certification requirement to have adequate pasture available to the animals.

CLA can be supplied in large controlled amounts though supplements. Although CLA may appear to be just another weight loss supplement, its anticancer properties appear to be real and should not be overlooked. Typical doses are 0.75 grams to 4 grams a day. One can also consider applying CLA topically to guarantee the cancer is subjected to a high dose. This can be done by puncturing the CLA softball supplement and spreading the oil inside with the fingers. Keep CLA away from the eyes because it is very irritating.

(9) Reduce blood glucose levels

Take steps to reduce blood glucose levels. The popular saying that "sugar feeds cancer" probably has a lot of truth. Glucose is a sugar that is the staple food of cancer cells. My understanding is that cancer cells metabolize glucose anaerobically (without oxygen or at least with very little oxygen) and generate lactic acid which in turn attacks muscle. If you have ever exercised too much and experienced sore muscles, you are familiar with lactic acid. Some of this muscle protein may be then used by the cancer to grow. Anyway, almost everyone agrees it is wise to try to avoid high glycemic index foods like sugar and starches.

Chromium supplements can lower glucose levels significantly, on the order of 7%. This may not sound like a big improvement at first glance. However, normal fasting glucose levels range from 60-90, so that the most desirable baseline level is really 60 instead of zero. So if the fasting glucose level is 100, then 7 points is just about the improvement level needed all by itself to get into the normal range. Chromium picolinate is the most popular chromium supplement and also the least expensive. On a bad note, chromium picolinate has been linked to DNA damage in a few studies, one of the three requisites for cancer. Chromium polynicotinate (ChromeMate, chromium bound to niacin) is harder to find but seems to be the best choice for supplementing. But by far the best way to reduce blood glucose levels is to pretend you are a diabetic and cut down on sweets and refined foods like white flour and white rice.

(10) Eat cancer fighting foods and nutrients

Eat more raw, unprocessed, uncooked, and natural foods to supply nutrients and enzymes for healing and repairing cell damage. Many useful enzymes in foods can be damaged or destroyed by heating. Look for organic apples, bell peppers, celery, cherries, grapes, nectarines, peaches, pears, potatoes, raspberries, spinach, and strawberries because they often have high levels of pesticides. These otherwise wonderful foods are called the "dirty dozen" because they account for as much as 90% of our exposure to pesticides in foods.

Include a multivitamin supplement and additional vitamins C and E, selenium, folic acid, and co-enzyme Q10. The ascorbic acid form of vitamin C is very acidic and may destroy pancreatin, especially if taken at the same time. Take vitamin C with meals. Another form of vitamin C, calcium ascorbate or ester C, does not have this acidity problem.

Lycopene is an antioxidant found in tomato products that has been associated with reduced prostate cancer risk. Lycopene counteracts the cancer growth promoter IGF-1. Lycopene is more easily absorbed if the tomato has been cooked. About 20 mg of Lycopene a week is needed to make a significant difference, so do not expect too much from the 3 mg per week typically included in multivitamin supplements.

Broccoli and other cruciferous (cross shaped leaves) vegetables such as cabbage, cauliflower, and brussel sprouts contain the cancer fighting chemicals D-glucarate, sulfurophane, di-indolylmethane (DIM), and indole-3-carbinol (I3C). DIM and its precursor I3C are available in supplements but have low bioavailability in plain formulations. Broccoli sprouts have an especially high sulfurophane content. These compounds are said to affect estrogen metabolism and/or activate cancer attacking enzymes. Other cruciferous vegetables include radishes, turnips, kale, chard, and rutabaga.

Garlic, oregano, curry (contains turmeric or its extract curcumin), and olive leaf may be helpful. Dark grapes, carrots, maitake and shiitake mushrooms, and almonds are sometimes advocated as having cancer healing properties. The liver, which has to process the dead cancer cells, can be pampered with artichokes and milk thistle.

Strawberries and red raspberries have been associated with reduced cancer risk. This is probably due to their ellagic acid content, a powerful and well studied natural anticarcinogenic compound. Walnuts and pomegranates are other good sources of ellagic acid. Topical ellagic acid has been shown in studies to inhibit skin cancer.

(11) Watch out for trans fats and omega 6 oils

There are good fats and bad fats for cancer treatment and prevention. By limiting protein intake, fat intake may also plummet too low. Fat is necessary and should not be regarded as undesirable. But it is important to be discerning about the effects of fats on cancer.

Omega 3 polyunsaturated oils from fish, walnuts, and flax seeds have been shown to inhibit cancer growth through an antiestrogen mechanism. On the other hand, much more common omega 6 polyunsaturated oils can promote cancer growth by stimulating the overproduction of "bad" prostaglandins. These are hormones that encourage inflammation and the growth of small blood vessels, two things needed by cancers. Omega 6 content is especially high in corn, sunflower, safflower oil, cottonseed, and soybean oils. Consider using olive oil for foods that will not be cooked. Extra virgin olive oil is an ideal source of fat and contains polyphenols that disrupt cancer by inhibiting estrogen from reacting with the cell.

Check the ingredients of prepared foods to completely avoid trans-fats or hydrogenated fats (fried foods, margarines, vegetable shortening, pastries, candies, french fries, biscuits). Dairy products are one of the few natural sources of trans fats but most of the concern is rightly directed at refined foods. Partially hydrogenated oils are not partially bad, they are totally bad! Trans fats take up residence in cell membranes but are not permeable. When improperly located in a cell membrane, trans fats impede the normal cellular exchange that lets nutrition and oxygen in and wastes out. Trans fats are also a cause for insulin resistance and diabetes. Insulin is a very large molecule it has a difficult time passing through a cell wall clogged with man made fats. The body often ends up rejecting cells with trans fats. They become isolated by fatty deposits on the heart muscle and arteries. These lesions block circulation, damage heart action, inhibit cell renewal and impede the free flow of blood and lymph fluids.

Saturated fats, and especially those from plant sources, do not appear to have an impact on cancer. Saturated fats are are good for cooking because they are stable. Concerns about animal fats include cancer promoting hormones and toxins that may accompany them. Coconut oil has a completely undeserved bad reputation for good health but is an ideal oil for cooking. Coconut oil is about 50% lauric acid (found abundantly in human milk) that enhances the performance of tumor necrosis (killing) factor present in the body by 60 times. See the topical page for a skin cancer remedy using coconut oil.

(12) Blend flaxseed with cottage cheese

One of the simplest cures for cancer was proposed in 1950's by Dr. Johanna Budwig, a German biochemist. Dr. Budwig found the blood of cancer patients was deficient in certain important essential ingredients derived from omega 3 oils called phosphatides and lipoproteins, while the blood of a healthy person usually contains sufficient quantities of these essential nutrients. She found that when these nutrients were restored by eating a combination of organic flax seed oil and low fat cottage cheese blended together, cancer tumors shrank. Testimonials for the effectiveness of the Budwig protocol can be found for almost every type of cancer. It is also claimed to work for heart disease and arthritis.

Modern research has provided vindication for Budwig and insights as to why flax seed can be so powerful against cancers. One study found flax seeds increase the apoptosis or self-suicide index of their breast cancer cells by 31%. Both the flax oil and the natural lignan precursors in flaxseed were necessary to achieve these results. Lignans are produced in the intestines by bacteria that convert the precursors in flaxseeds into different lignan molecules. These lignans then readily enter the blood. Lignans compete with estrogen for binding to its receptors and they are anti-angiogenesis factors (they stop blood vessel growth into tumors).

inexpensive flaxseed meal

This inexpensive flaxseed meal product available in supermarkets can be mixed with lowfat yogurt or cottage cheese as part of the Budwig diet cancer protocol.

Another study found that flaxseed counteracts insulin like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and epidermal growth factor, two major growth factors for cancer cells of all types. Tumor cells secrete an angiogenesis factor called VEGF which induces the formation of blood vessels into the tumors. Flaxseed inhibits cancer metastasis and does so partially through the inhibition of VEGF release from cancer cells. In yet another study, flaxseed products were shown to reduce the metastasis of melanoma cells, one of the most metastatic of all cancers and clearly the most dangerous type of skin cancer.

A simple strategy for skin cancer is to eat daily a quarter cup or more of flaxseed meal mixed in low fat organic plain yogurt or cottage cheese. How the mixture is prepared is important because we are trying to cause a certain chemical reaction between the oils in the flax seeds and the proteins in the yogurt or cottage cheese. This can be accomplished by using a blender to thoroughly mix the ingredients and make the flax seed particles as small as possible. Another good method is to grind whole flax seeds in a coffee grinder just before adding them to yogurt. Either way, let the blended mixture stand for a few minutes. The mixture can be sweetened with organic fruit spread. It should be noted that the Budwig protocol had several forbidden foods such as sugar, all animal fats, all meats, margarine, all foods with trans-fatty acids, butter, salad oils with the exception of extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar, and preservatives in food. She also stressed the importance of adequate sunlight on health.

(13) Alkalize your body

Try to make the body chemistry less hostile to pancreatin by choosing foods that make the body less acidic. There is a theory that acidosis or an acid body chemistry is a cause of many diseases including cancer. There are two facets of concern. First is the direct acidity levels of the foods and drinks we consume. Second, and probably more importantly, we should be concerned with what remains of the foods ("ash") after oxidation that ends up circulating in the blood. Interestingly, those foods that leave highly acidic ash are usually high in protein or high glycemic index foods. These include meat, eggs, seafood, nuts except for almonds, rice, beans, bread, grains, cereals, corn, chocolate, sugar, peas. Most ripe fruit and vegetables are on the good list to produce non-acidic or alkaline ash. Maybe this explains why the five fruit and vegetable servings a day advice to avoid cancer is effective. Certain medications may also lead to an acidosis condition.

Correcting an acid body chemistry is a very critical strategy because it provides an environment that protects pancreatin enzymes from destruction. Enzymes are not normally consumed in reactions, so that they can be used over and over again if they are not destroyed by other factors. Still, reactions that destroy cancer cells with enzymes may have acidic byproducts that in turn destroy the enzymes. Antacids, mineral supplements, and vitamin D are probably the easiest way to rapidly improve an acid body chemistry, especially when used in conjunction with an alkalizing diet. Other ideas to specifically reduce skin acidity include soaking in alkaline mineral baths such as Epsom salts regularly. Even using bar soap (pH typically 9.5) regularly may allow alkalinity to be absorbed through the skin to neutralize acids that deplete cancer fighting enzymes.

A simple saliva acidity test can be performed to get an indication whether the body chemistry is currently too acidic. This should be performed just after waking up and before eating or drinking anything. This test involves obtaining an aquarium pH test kit (~$4-10), available at pet stores. The test and results are described on the acid test page. If the wake up saliva tests acidic, consider an alkalizing diet and taking antacids (and testing) on a regular basis to lower the acidity (increase the pH)

(14) Calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D

Get enough calcium balanced with magnesium. Common antacids may reduce body acidity when taken regularly and will also supply minerals needed by the body such as calcium and magnesium. Many sources recommend maintaining a 2:1 balance for calcium compared to magnesium when using supplements, otherwise a magnesium deficiency may result. Common, inexpensive sources of calcium are antacids. Calcium carbonate (Tums) is the most popular antacid, but other brands (e.g. Rolaids) and types of supplements may do a better job of maintaining the balance of the minerals (calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc, etc) needed by the body and becoming absorbed. It may be best to take antacids a couple of hours after meals so this will not interfere with the digestive process. Lowering the acidity levels in the body requires minerals to be absorbed, as opposed to simply supplying alkalinity. The calcium in calcium citrate products is advertised to be about 50% absorbable compared to 10% for calcium carbonate. Likewise, magnesium citrate is more absorbable than the more common magnesium oxide. Citracal Plus with magnesium is fairly inexpensive and widely available, has a good balance of minerals, and includes vitamin D (which aids calcium absorption) and vitamin B6. Unfortunately, it also contains copper at 0.5 mg per tablet (RDA=2mg). Copper mineral supplements should be avoided, unless there is a clear need, because copper aids building new blood supplies to the cancer. Coral calcium products purportedly contain dozens of trace minerals that may have an important effect on improving body alkalinity.

These is controversy concerning excessive calcium supplementation because high calcium levels are also associated with rapid cell growth and other health problems. Cancer cells do utilize calcium because calcification in tumors shows up on diagnostic X-Rays. Grossly exceeding the calcium RDA of approximately 1000 mg per day is not recommended under normal circumstances. Ideal calcium intake appears to depend on the amount of protein intake. Japanese women with low protein diets get by with around 400 mg of calcium per day with low cancer and osteoporosis rates. Increasing Vitamin D through supplements or (gasp) moderate sun exposure is a way to reduce body acidity levels with reasonable calcium intake levels. Vitamin D supplements are inexpensive but are limited in the US to 1000 IU due to concern of its toxicity. Some sources say the RDA of 400 IU for vitamin D is far too low: a half hour's sun exposure can total the equivalent of 10000 IU of vitamin D and toxicity problems are not likely to occur below 4000 IU exposure per day. Consider using the acid test as an aid to adjust body acidity using calcium, magnesium, potassium, vitamin D, and an alkalizing diet.

In addition to helping to correct body acidity problems and thereby aid the function of pancreatin enzymes, there is another known mechanism that uses calcium to impede cancer. If the cancer cell can be coerced into consuming too much calcium, the cell's glucose metabolism fails and the cancer cell dies. This mechanism is the subject of new cancer drug research, but it will probably not happen naturally without adequate calcium intake.

(15) Respect the function of stomach acid

Adequate stomach acid is needed to properly digest foods. My feeling is that if stomach acid levels drop then extra digestive burden falls on digestive enzymes. The result is that pancreatin enzymes may not be available for cancer control. Do not take antacids with meals or drink excessive water with meals. If possible, confine eating to meals rather than continuously snacking. Studies with mice show this reduces cancer risk. Consider supplementing betaine hydrochloride with meals to enhance stomach acid activity. Go to bed on an empty stomach.

(16) Drink enough clean water

Water is essential to good health as it makes up 70% of the human body. Drink enough water: consuming over 2.5 liters of fluid per day is associated with reduced cancer risk.

Consider using a water filter. Filter companies have an effective saying: "Buy a filter or be a filter". Inexpensive pitcher cartridge filters work well for filtering drinking water of chlorine, lead, iron, and copper when changed monthly, but do not remove fluoride. Filters can remove many other impurities in your local drinking water supply. Other effective filtering methods include distillers and reverse osmosis systems.

Chlorine is used as the main drinking water disinfectant in the United States. Essentially a low level pesticide, chlorine combines with organic substances to form carcinogenic trihalomethanes (THM's) including chloroform. Higher levels of THM's in drinking water have been shown to correlate with higher levels of cancer in studies of drinking water of several US cities.

Chlorine as a vapor is absorbed by the lungs, and chlorine based contaminants in drinking water such as chloroform and trichloroethylene (TCE) are released and readily absorbed when water is heated. It is estimated that 50% of our absorption of chlorine compounds come from hot showers. Turn on an exhaust fan before showering to minimize exposure to chlorine vapors. Take shorter, less frequent, or cooler showers. Consider using a shower water filter. Less frequent bathing also helps retain skin oils that are needed to produce vitamin D from sunlight.

Triclosan, an antimicrobial agent used in household dishwashing soaps reacts with chlorinated water to produce significant quantities of chloroform. Research also suggests that the reaction of triclosan with chlorine could be producing highly chlorinated dioxins in the presence of sunlight. Because of its antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties, triclosan is found in toothpastes, acne creams, deodorants, lotions, and hand soaps. Unlike conventional bar soaps, triclosan is readily absorbed through the skin. Try to limit your exposure to this chemical.

A drawback of filtering drinking water is that alkalizing minerals are also removed so that the water may become acidic. Consider neutralizing the acid (add minerals such as coral calcium) or buying bottled drinking water if yours tests acidic. Incidentally, acidic drinking water has recently been shown to result in a higher risk of diabetes. Both natural diabetes and natural cancer control depend on a healthy pancreas which is sensitive to excessive acidity. Easy and inexpensive pH tests for acidity are described on the acid test page. Most public water supplies are processed to not be acidic to prevent plumbing corrosion and lead from leaching, but private supplies are more variable.

Fluoride is added to some water supplies but can cause genetic damage in both plant and animal cells. Fluoride can also interfere with enzyme reactions. Dental fluoride treatments have been shown in a study to increase the amount of serum IGF-1 which seems to promote the rapid growth of cancers. Choose a toothpaste without fluoride. Using bottled water in place of drinking water that has been fluoridated should be considered.

If possible, use glass cookware to avoid excess exposure to metals such as aluminum, iron, chromium, nickel, and copper. Nonstick coated cookware has come under scrutiny for emitting toxins and carcinogens when heated above 400F. Also a chemical used in the manufacture of nonstick cookware is a suspected carcinogen.

(17) Try curcumin

Extracted from the roots of the turmeric plant (a member of the ginger family), curcumin is what gives the spice curry its yellow color although it does not have much of a taste or smell itself. Curcumin disrupts cancer from more simultaneous mechanisms than probably any other known substance. Here's a list of the good things curcumin has been found to do to cancer through studies: It inhibits proliferation of cancer cells, induces apoptosis of cancer cells, inhibits angiogenesis, inhibits aromatase, and suppresses adhesion molecules expression. It downregulates EGFR activity, HER2/neu, Bcl-2 expression, NF-κB activation, AP-1 activation, PI3K-Akt pathway, c-Jun kinase activation, COX2 expression, MMP-9 expression, inducible nitric oxide synthase, and cyclin D1 expression. If you know what two or more of these mechanisms mean, congratulations! If not, you are in good company.

Curcumin has limited bioavailability when taken orally in capsules because it is soluble in fat but not water. Curcumin has been shown through studies to have an positive effect on both squamous cell carcinomas and basal cell carcinomas. There are a couple of tricks to improve the effectiveness of curcumin. Dissolving curcumin in saturated fat such as cream, coconut oil or coconut milk enables it to get directly into the lymph system and bypass the first pass filtering of the liver. The lymphatic system bathes all the cells in the body. Another way is to chew the capsules (thank goodness they do not taste like curry!) with dark chocolate or macadamia nuts. A dash of black pepper which contains piperine can help its absorption. Curcumin is synergistic when combined with quercitin and glutamine. Applying curcumin topically by dissolving it in coconut oil is an option for skin cancers, albeit a bright yellow messy one. Try a small area first and avoid applying to hair (unless you want a good laugh). Typical doses for curcumin are 1 to 5 grams twice a day. Serious adverse effects have not been reported in humans taking high doses of curcumin, but it can interfere with some cancer treatments that target specific pathways.
